This is Caranx melampygus or Giant bluefin trevally

#COLORSOFTHEOCEAN_14

This fish we are looking at above has quite a few names, for which it is known as. You may have heard it called the Omilu, Ulua, or perhaps, Giant Bluefin Trevally or simply Jack.

However, there is only one scientific name, which is Caranx melampygus. They are a common game fish in Hawaii and are quite delicious to eat. The young ones, under 10 lbs, are called Papio. When they are young, they can often be seen near shore. Once they get older, they are typically found in deeper waters. Omilu can get up to 4 feet in length, weigh about 100 lbs, and live about 20 years.

You can identify them by a grayish/silver coloration with fluorescent speckles of blue and black spots. This fluorescent blue coloration can be found on their dorsal, caudal/tail fin, and anal fins. While their pectoral/side fins carry a hint of gold. They always seem to be on the hunt. It is believed that the more Omilu on the reef, the healthier the coral is. This is because they are one of the top predators on the reef. Fun fact, the shape of the tail fin on the Omilu tells us that this is a fish that can swim very fast and maintain rapid speeds for long distances. This characteristic is very important for hunting and outrunning larger predators. Often times, they can be seen hovering or cruising with eels, goatfish, or octopus, in hopes of snagging a leftover morsel while they are hunting.
