This is Hypselodoris imperialis or Imperial nudibranch

#COLORSOFTHEOCEAN_1

These colorful 2-inch creatures were photographed off the coast of Maui, during one of our recent custom Ocean Projects. It is a Imperial Nudibranch (Hypselodoris imperialis).

They are one of over 3,000 valid species currently recognized world wide. Nudibranchs (which literally means, nude/naked branchia or gills) are shell-less mollusks with their feathery gills atop their body. This particular Nudibranch is usually found in pairs, with one trailing the other, as depicted in these images.

Some data suggests that these beautiful creatures were once scarce and perhaps even close to extinction.

The image above was taken during a Private Ocean Project Maui Snorkel Tour.

This colorful image was taken off a West Maui Beach by the dedicated staff of Ocean Project Maui. They offer custom, private snorkel tours around the island of Maui, Hawaii. Each #COLORSOFTHEOCEAN image you see in our monthly blog, was captured during a private guided snorkel tour.
